San Francisco Bay Area musician and teacher and Virginia native Bill Evans has been involved with bluegrass music and the banjo for over thirty years as a player, workshop leader, writer and historian. As author of Banjo For Dummies, Bill occupies a unique niche in the banjo world.

He is celebrated worldwide for both his traditional and progressive bluegrass banjo playing styles but he is also known as being an outstanding and inspirational group workshop instructor.

Bill currently performs with Nashville-based fiddler Megan Lynch but he has also performed with Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, Michael Witcher, Laurie Lewis, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Dry Branch Fire Squad, and Robin & Linda in addition to leading his own bands Cloud Valley, Bluegrass Intentions, Due West, Rustler’s Moon with Kathy Kallick and Bill Evans String Summit. Bill also performs in a solo, historically-themed show that he calls The Banjo in America.

Bill is a NashCamp favorite and has been a fixture at Bluegrass Week for many years. In addition, he co-hosts the NashCamp Fall Banjo Retreat with Sonny Osborne (October 17-19, 2008). He is in high demand as a workshop instructor - he’s taught multiple times at Sore Fingers Bluegrass Week (England); Augusta Heritage Bluegrass Week (West Virginia); Camp Bluegrass (Texas); Banjo Camp North (Massachusetts); the Midwest Banjo Camp (Michigan); the American Banjo Camp (Washington) and the California Bluegrass Association’s Music Camp (California). His students include Chris Pandolfi (The Infamous Stringdusters), Wes Corbett, Jayme Stone, Erik Yates (Hot Buttered Rum) and Greg Liszt (Bruce Springsteen, Crooked Still).

In addition to authoring Banjo For Dummies, the world’s most popular banjo instructional book, he also has co-authored Parking Lot Picker’s Songbook: Banjo Edition from Mel Bay Publications and hosts three popular instructional DVDs from AcuTab Publications. His recordings Bill Evans Plays Banjo and Native and Fine feature his outstanding original compositions with support from such players as Rob Ickes, Mike Compton, Stuart Duncan, Darol Anger and others. In addition, he has authored the popular “Off The Record” column for Banjo Newsletter magazine for over fifteen years.
